In 1893 Theophile Bader and his cousin Alphonse
Kahn decided to open a fashion store in a small haberdasher's shop at the
corner of Lafayette and Chaussée d'Antin streets.
In 1896,
the company purchased the entire building at n°1 rue La Fayette.
From the start, Galeries Lafayette presented
an assortment of frills and ruffles, ribbons, lace and small feminine
articles and asserted thus their vocation : high fashion and latest
novelties. In order to stand apart from its
competitors, Theophile Bader decided to sell fashionable models at
affordable prices.
Therefore, he launched or bought manufacturing facilities which made
products exclusively for Galeries Lafayette. He also knew that fashion,
tastes and envies changed very often. His method was totally original at
the time. An
outdoor sign claimed on the Lafayette street side of the building in
bright lights : " Galeries Lafayette , the best bargain store in all
Paris "
In 1996 Galeries Lafayette celebrated their 100th anniversary. On this
occasion a few prestigious brands reissued one of their greatest
classics : scarves by Cartier, a bee broach by Dior or a Baccarat
vase. A thousand other brands offered a thousand exclusive products
for the " Dernier cri " exhibition.
